Why the world's biggest wheel stopped.
Dubai Ain is the largest wheel in the world. However, it was stopped earlier this year because it was creating small vibrations while spinning, which could potentially have badly affected the foundations of the embankment island.
An engineering miscalculation? It's the biggest wheel in the world and no one on the entire globe has ever done anything on this scale before. Especially out at sea on an artificial island.
How much could an engineering error cost the city? A billion dollars.
Permanent residents of Bluewaters can certainly rejoice that the island won't be so crowded now and the restaurant will be easier to get dinner reservations, but it's a bit of a shame for the entrepreneurs who have staked out this location and for the creators of the wheel themselves.
It is, after all, an incredibly bold idea that takes your breath away - to build the largest Ferris wheel in the world on an artificial island.
The scheduled launch of the wheel after the shutdown was scheduled for September 1, but so far it stands motionless and only blinks hello. There is no news or forecast in the local media.
There are several versions of what will happen next:
- will find a technical solution to damp the vibrations and the wheel will be started again;
- the wheel will simply be left as it is without movement, like a monument;
- and the third, it will be disassembled and moved to solid ground, such as the Dubai Creek neighborhood, where these small vibrations will be of no consequence.
Place your bets on which scenario will materialize.
